How to Score 500+ Points in a Single Game — A Pro Guide

The ×2 Cells Are Everything

Every game at the highest level is decided by the purple ×2 cells. They sit at all four corners and along the edges. A single equation landing on a ×2 cell with a high answer can deliver 100–200 points in one move. Position your tiles to reach these cells before the AI does.

Most beginners ignore the ×2 cells for the first half of the game, focusing instead on whatever equation scores best right now. This is the single biggest strategic mistake in BEDMAS. The ×2 cell payoff is so large that nearly every other decision should be made with corner access in mind.

5 Patterns From Top Players

  • Open the corner early. Your first few moves should set up a path to a ×2 corner cell. Sacrifice 10–20 points now to claim 150+ points later.
  • Use multiplication in equations. Not only does × earn +1 bonus per use, but equations involving multiplication naturally produce higher answers — which means higher base scores.
  • Chain across bonus cells. Chaining equations like 4 × 5 = 20 = 100 ÷ 5 lets a single turn hit both a +10 green cell and a +5 blue cell simultaneously.
  • Deny the AI, don't just score yourself. If the AI is one move from a ×2 cell, play adjacent to it even at a lower score. Blocking a 150-point AI turn is worth more than your own 40-point move.
  • Save big tiles for bonus cells. High number tiles (80–100) produce high equation answers. Hold them until you can place them on a ×2 cell for maximum impact.

Managing the Clock

On timed modes, decision speed matters. Practice recognising equation patterns instantly: a + b = c, a × b = c, a − b = c. The more automatic your pattern recognition, the more time you spend on strategic placement rather than mental arithmetic.

Reading the Board State

Before every turn, scan the board for three things: (1) which ×2 cells are still open, (2) what tiles are already placed that your rack tiles can connect to, and (3) whether the AI is one move away from a high-value placement. This three-step scan takes about five seconds and dramatically improves decision quality.

Tile Composition at 500+ Points

Analysing the top leaderboard games, every 500+ point game featured at least three turns where the player scored 80 or more in a single move. You can't reach 500 with consistent 30-point plays — you need a few big turns. Build your strategy around creating those big turns rather than optimising every single move.
